Useful Numbers

Many people searching for their lost dog, usually do NOT know that they should visit local kennels, EVERY 15 DAYS AT THE LATEST, to personally check whether their pet has already been found.

Many people often do not even know where the local kennels are located, or do not know that their municipality, following the Italian law, which obliges every municipality to run its own kennel, may have signed an agreement with a kennel located some hundreds of kilometres away!

On the subject of kennels, although there are only a few kennels that actually post lost animals on our website’s free space hoping to find the legitimate family of an animal, we must mention that cooperation is very small or non-existent when communicating with kennels. This is the reason why we urge you to PERSONALLY visit the kennels because, calling, sending a fax, or an email has turned out too often to be COMPLETELY USELESS!

ALL the appeals that we receive are in fact ALWAYS sent to our Mailing List made up of people who have declared themselves available in helping reunite lost and found pets with their families, but also to ALL the e-mail addresses of the professional operators that we have succeeded in gathering and that are recorded in this database.

In hope of forever changing the situation of Italian kennels, the magazine Panaroma has written two very interesting and courageous articles, published during the spring of 2005, which explains very well what it means to be a dog living in conditions, which are unworthy of any living being. Because this is the end of many dogs, of YOUR dog, if it ends up in a kennel and if YOU do not go and look after it...

We suggest reading these articles (only in Italian) using the following links.

Therefore, if you have lost your pet or if you need to know whom you should ask if you have found one, this database lists names and addresses of associations, local authorities, kennels, gattili (same as a kennel but for cats), and pet shelters.
If it should happen that you have found an animal DO NOT bring it to structures which have proved to be inadequate and have been denounced, impounded by law and so on. Some of these, NONTHELESS, have even signed an agreement with one or more municipalities!

On the other hand, if you have lost a pet, these should be the first places you should visit in order to check that your dog has not disappeared right there! In the "Note" field you will find information about whom you should choose or strictly avoid, according to your case.

The "Note" field may not reflect the actual status of the each mentioned structure. Our editorial staff updates this field whenever it receives a new input. This means that our team may not have received news yet concerning the (positive or negative) evolution of a structure. This means that some of them, which result as "investigated" may not be any more, while others may have moved to this status without our editorial staff’s knowledge.

With special reference to the structures with animals (kennels, gattili, pet shelters) you are allowed to access them according to an agreement between the local council (amministrazione comunale) and the structure signing the agreement. This means that one or more Municipalities (this means the Government, "ergo" the CITIZENS!) pay for the animals to be kept in public structures (such as municipal or interzonal kennels and so on) or in private structures (kennels and pet shelters i.e. belonging to private companies, which have offered their hospitality service in change of a contribution).

A structure, which has signed an agreement, no matter whether it is a public or a private one, MUST grant an access to citizens: THEY CANNOT FOBID YOU TO ENTER! Opening times and visit days must be adequate. If this should not be the case: contact the Mayor with a letter, asking to modify the agreement signed with the Municipality.

In case you should not be allowed to enter the structure, nonetheless it may have singed even only one agreement with a Municipality: you have the right to contact the police and ask its direct intervention. IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO ENTER DURING THE FIXED OPENING HOURS, WHICH MUST BE DISPLAYED at the entrance!

PAY ATTENTION: please be aware that the definitions ‘convenzionato’ (conventional) or ‘privato’ (private) showing up in the "Note" field do not mean that the structure is always run in an irreproachable way! Therefore, do not expect to find in this field information such as: investigated (indagato), denounced, and impounded by law and so on. Try to avoid IN ANY WAY to bring animals to structures, which show both of this information.

And what should you do if the structure is a private one and you are afraid that your pet has got in there and they do not let you in? Normally it is enough to threaten the personnel of theft in order to open doors.

And once you are "inside"? Open your eyes and demand to visit the entire structure and check carefully each and every cage for your animal. In some structures it is easier to get in if you declare that you are simply looking after an animal to adopt!

The data reported here has been collected from public records and are continuously updated. This database is useful to ANIMALS as well as HUMAN BEINGS. It is useful to know about the good structures in Italy but even more importantly to know about the bad structures that don’t want to be known.

Help us to complete and keep it updated, sending us data to put in or to update simply by e-mail or via normal mail (see our |IT| Contacts section).
